How do I take care of my (leather) saddle?

You should dust the saddle with a rag so you don’t rub dirt into pores of leather. Then wash with good liquid saddle soap mixed with water or a good saddle soap with wet sponge. Don’t over do it. You can oil it with Neetsfoot oil or Fiebings Aussie. What we found to work very well too are Leather Therapy products. Don’t oil it too often, as there would be oil build-up that attracts dust. The easiest way to imagine what the leather likes and what not is to think of it as skin.

How wide are SMARTFLEX™ trees compared to other saddles?

The STANDARD (STD) gullet is about 10 degrees wider than Full QH bars. The SUPERWIDE (SW) gullet is more like 20 degrees wider.

What is the delivery time on a saddle?

All saddles are custom crafted and handmade by master saddlers in the US and in Germany within 10-12 weeks. In rare cases, the delivery time can take up to six months.

What is the difference between AIRPAD™ GRIP and AIRPAD™ TECFLEECE?

The *NEW* AIRPAD™ comes with two outer jackets to choose from:

AIRPAD™ TECFLEECE is washable, soft, breathable fabric on the top and bottom touching the Horse’s skin. It grips nicely and wicks moisture beautifully and actually better than natural wool because “engineered fabric” fibers don’t absorb moisture and swell up to clog pores of the breathable air space between the fibers.

AIRPAD™ GRIP is a washable, breathable, laminated surface composed of an outer layer of ToughTech™ Mesh with a rubbery feel. It is breathable because of the open-waffle grid pattern of bonding it to the thin layer of breathable felt. ToughTech™ Mesh is noted for its air transparent anti slip characteristics. The AIRPAD™ GRIP has this surface on top where the saddle sits and on the bottom, Horse’s side.

What is the difference between Natural Horseman Saddles and Parelli Saddles?

Natural Horseman Saddles Inc. is proud to be the exclusive provider of Parelli Saddles since 2001, which marks the beginning of Parelli Saddles. All saddles made by Natural Horseman Saddles (incl. the Parelli Saddles) are based on the same concept for the Horse and SMARTFLX™ trees. So your Horse can move as nature intended.

What is the difference between SMARTFLX™ and EQUIFLEX?

SMARTFLX™ and Equiflex saddle trees are made exclusively by historic tree maker Ed Steele (Ed Steele Saddle Tree LLC, Tennessee, USA). Even though SMARTFLX™ trees incorporate similar components to Equiflex trees, they differ in important construction features: SMARTFLX™ trees are made exclusively for Natural Horseman Saddles to proprietary specifications of shape, dimension and principle of function for the benefit of the horse in motion based upon extensive research and product development.

SMARTFLX™ and Equiflex western trees include elastomer substance as the flexible material molded into their tree bars. This remarkable compound substance has special molecular properties that marry elasticity with sturdy shape-retentive properties and does not deteriorate nor lose its integrity over time. The creation of this compound been an historically important scientific development.

SMARTFLX™ trees also incorporate this compound in the groundseats of their foundations, which adds benefit to the horse/rider comfort and performance connection. Unique to SMARTFLX™ a generally wider, flatter ergonomic shape that receives the Horse´s back when it lifts and expands in motion, therefore promoting optimal back function and overall healthy biomechanics. Equiflex refers to tree styles that are different from SMARTFLX™. Equiflex tree shapes generally have steeper rafter angles and more “rock” along their bars, despite the fact that both SMARTFLX™ and Equiflex incorporate the elastomer compound in the substance of their bars. SMARTFLX™ saddle trees have been (and still are) the substructure of Parelli Saddles and Natural Horseman Saddles since 2006.

What is the difference between STANDARD (STD) and SUPERWIDE (SW)?

Throughout our more than 15 years of research, Horses consistently indicated that their moving bodies prefer more breadth and a less convex shape all along the underside of the tree bars than people might suppose. The SMARTFLEX™ STANDARD (STD) provides a shoulder area that is essentially about 10 degrees wider than “full quarter horse” bars, and horses love it. Of course, the angle/attitude of the bars changes subtly all along the length from shoulder area to the rear of the saddle. We discovered that even narrower horses traveled better with this wider/flatter shape because it “hugged” their expanding, lifting backs rather than fitting them when their backs were “down” while they were standing. The SMARTFLX™ SUPERWIDE (SW) gullet is essentially 10 degrees wider than the STANDARD (STD) – and therefore almost 20 degrees wider than a “full quarter horse bar”. It´s a terrific gullet for the very wide “coffee-table” backs of large or small horses (Icelandics and Cobs to wide-sprung Arabians, broad Quarterhorses, Warmbloods, Drafts and Draft Crosses, etc.).

Why do you recommend using a Back Cinch?

We highly recommend using a BACK CINCH for Safety reasons for both Horse and Rider. Connected via a short (4-6″) cinch hobble to the front cinch and tightened to be fairly snug, the connection of the two puts pressure on the sternum area, not the soft belly of your Horse. If the back cinch can be snug but not uncomfortable, it helps stabilize the back of the saddle (horizontally and vertically) during travel and facilitates a balanced, comfortable fit of the saddle in movement from the Horse’s perspective. Therefore, it is safer for Horse and Rider, too. Horses do not object to a BACK CINCH if it is angled forward and connected to the front cinch with a short hobble. On the contrary, if it were tightened over the soft belly, it would be very uncomfortable – and, if it is left dangling under the soft belly (as is often seen) its usefulness is absolutely minimal. If it is dangling with lots of slack, it could even be dangerous: a horse could catch his rear foot in the space if he should kick at a fly or something. After all, there is good reasoning for riding with a BACK CINCH connected to the front cinch, just make sure to not have it too loose or too tight – and connected.
